Josh Carrington Making His Mark in the Premiership

Former Ospreys academy full-back Josh Carrington has made an eye-catching start to his professional career with Bristol Bears, scoring on his Gallagher Premiership debut in the 42–24 win over Leicester Tigers.

Just a few months ago, Carrington was balancing university rugby with studies at Cardiff Met, where he became one of the standout performers in BUCS Super Rugby. Over the 2024–25 season, he produced a series of strong displays at full-back, crossing for four tries and playing a key role as Cardiff Met finished sixth in the league. His form earned recognition from BUCS commentator Joe Byrnes, who nameCarrington’s route to the Premiership hasn’t been straightforward. Released from the Ospreys academy, he continued to develop through the Welsh club and university system, also representing Swansea RFC in the Welsh Premiership. His consistency, pace, and ball-carrying ability soon drew interest from across the border, with Bristol Bears Director of Rugby Pat Lam offering him a professional opportunity ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.

Lam, known for identifying players from non-traditional pathways, praised Carrington’s attitude and work ethic:

“He was dropped out of the Ospreys academy, but I saw him in the BUCS programme and said there’s your pathway. He’s another example of the talent you can find outside the system.”

At 6ft 2in, Carrington combines physical presence with sharp footwork and an intelligent kicking game. Comfortable across the back three, he brings versatility to Bristol’s squad and has already made a strong impression among teammates and supporters alike.

Carrington’s early impact in the Premiership highlights both his resilience and the growing strength of university rugby as a development route into the professional game. From being released in Wales to scoring on debut in England’s top flight, his rise is a clear example of how determination and perseverance can turn setbacks into opportunity making him Breakout Player of the Year.

Congratulations Josh.
