Dragons re-sign U20 star Thomas

There’s nothing more exciting than watching a young lock take his first steps in senior rugby – and then double down on his ambitions. Nick Thomas has done exactly that, signing a new Senior Academy contract with Dragons RFC following a breakthrough season that’s put him firmly on the radar.

At just 19, Thomas is already showing the kind of steel and presence in the second row that marks out a player with serious long-term potential. After coming through the grassroots ranks at St Peter’s RFC and developing further with Newport in Super Rygbi Cymru, the call-up to the Dragons senior side earlier this season was well earned – though not something he saw coming.

“Making my senior debut this season was something special and wasn’t expected,” Thomas said. “It was a dream come true.”

That debut came in December’s EPCR Challenge Cup win over Newcastle Falcons – an eye-opening moment for the young lock, who had impressed in the Dragons system and earned his place through consistent performances.

It’s been a year of big steps for Thomas, who also broke into the Wales U20 squad before injury cut his Six Nations campaign short. His inclusion against France showed the confidence national coaches already have in his development, and that trust looks well-placed.

Re-signing with Dragons was, in his own words, “an easy decision.”

“The club has played a huge role in my development, and I feel it’s the best place for me to continue growing as a player,” Thomas said. “The environment, coaching staff, and opportunities to compete at a high level make it the ideal place to push myself.”

That environment has become a vital part of the Dragons identity – building a team with homegrown roots, real ambition, and a willingness to back young players. Academy Manager Lewis Roberts was quick to highlight Thomas’ commitment and hard work, both on and off the field.

“Nick has earned his opportunity through dedication and performance,” Roberts said. “We’re excited to watch him continue progressing in our system.”

Head coach Filo Tiatia echoed that sentiment, calling it “always special” to see local talent break into the senior side. For the Dragons, the pathway from academy to professional rugby isn’t just a slogan – it’s being lived by players like Nick Thomas.
