Bristol Bears have confirmed that highly-rated Academy tighthead prop Jimmy Halliwell has signed a new long-term contract with the club.
The Bristolian continues his journey with the Bears after progressing through the club’s Academy pathway, having already established himself as one of English rugby’s brightest young front-row prospects.
The 22-year-old has made 25 appearances for the Bears since signing professional terms in 2022. The former England U20 World Cup winner was a member of the club’s title-winning U18 side in 2021.
His new deal sees Halliwell follow in the footsteps of fellow Academy graduate George Kloska, whose rise from the Bears pathway to full England honours has provided inspiration for the next generation of Bristolians.
Director of Rugby Pat Lam said: “Jimmy is another fantastic example of the quality of player our Academy continues to produce. He’s a proud Bristolian, a World Cup winner with England Under-20s and someone who has all the attributes to become an outstanding tighthead prop.
“One of the biggest strengths of our environment is the people within it. Jimmy has had the opportunity to learn every day from experienced players like Ellis Genge, Jake Woolmore, Max Lahiff, George Kloska and Lovejoy Chawatama, as well as working under the expert eyes of Mark Irish and Chris Morgan.
“George’s journey from our Academy to England shows what’s possible, and Jimmy has the same hunger to improve. We’re excited to see how far he can go because he’s only scratching the surface of his potential.”
Halliwell said: “Signing this contract is something I’m incredibly proud of. Growing up in Bristol, coming through the Academy and now continuing my journey with my hometown club means a huge amount to me.
“Being around this group every day, learning from World Class players and coaches is the best environment I could ask for as a young tighthead. It’s the perfect place for me to keep learning and developing.
“Seeing Ellis and George come through the same pathway, establish themselves for Bristol and then go on to play for England shows what’s possible if you keep working hard.
“That’s really inspiring for someone like me, and I want to keep developing, earn opportunities in a Bears shirt and hopefully follow a similar path in the future. “This club has shown so much belief in me from a young age and I’m excited to keep learning, improving and hopefully repay that faith over the coming years.”
