Cardiff Rugby is pleased to announce that Wales full-back Cam Winnett has signed an extension to his contract, further solidifying his future at the club.
The 21-year-old talent initially signed a long-term deal earlier this year, but following his impressive continued development, Winnett has agreed to extend his stay with Cardiff. This extension is a vital part of the club’s ongoing strategy to retain key homegrown players, with fellow teammates Liam Belcher and Ben Thomas also committing their futures to the Blue & Blacks.
“I’m so happy to extend my contract here and cannot thank the club enough for the opportunities I’ve been given,” said Winnett. “I just want to repay Cardiff by performing on the pitch. I absolutely love playing at the Arms Park and really enjoy being part of a very good group of players, who are building and developing together.”
Winnett, who has been part of the Cardiff Rugby pathway since his early days at Treorchy mini and juniors, made his senior debut against Harlequins in 2021, scoring a try while the majority of the first-team squad was in quarantine. His rapid rise continued as he featured for Cardiff RFC and Wales U20s, before breaking into the senior squad during the 2023-24 season.
In that season, Winnett was a key figure, making 17 appearances and impressing throughout. His performances earned him a call-up to the Wales Six Nations squad, and he has since established himself as a regular in the number 15 jersey. His talent didn’t go unnoticed, as he was named the Welsh Rugby Writers’ Young Player of the Year.
Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt expressed his delight in extending Winnett’s contract, highlighting his exceptional qualities both on and off the pitch. “While Cam only signed a long-term contract in the summer, his form and continued progression warrants a new deal, and we’re thrilled to extend his stay further,” Sherratt said. “He’s a top-quality player with a great skill set, and his professionalism and calmness on the field are impressive. He’s also a homegrown lad who grew up supporting the club, and it’s great to see him now playing alongside many of the boys he came through with. I’m confident he has a big future here, and in the game in general.”
